Dogs
for Adoption

How we prepare our dogs
for adoption
All
of
our dogs have gone through the ASPCA
Meet Your Match Canine-ality
assessment in addition to the Assess a Pet and SAFER behavior
evaluations.
To
find
the "canine-ality" of each dog, we
administer five assessments,
including friendliness, playfulness, energy level, motivation and
drive. Based on their results, our dogs are then placed in one of nine,
color-coded categories: Purple (Couch Potato, Constant Companion,
Teacher's Pet), Orange (Wallflower, Goofball, Busy Bee) and Green (Free
Spirit, Life of the Party, Go-Getter). When you come to our shelter,
you'll fill out a survey that will tell you which color (purple,
orange, green) of dog would be your best match!
CARE
volunteers,
during
their routine shift at the shelter, teach the shelter dogs gracious,
polite
behavior so when they go out in the real world they will impress
everyone they
meet.Obedience
methods learned from
Wendy DeCarlo and Dennis Damon of Dog
Obedience
Group are used
exclusively. We
highly recommend that our
dogs
continue
with Dog Obedience Group to ensure a seamless transition into their new
home.
The
dogs also receive veterinary examinations and vaccinations. All medical
records will be provided as part of the adoption process.
If you are
interested in adopting, please carefully read through our adoption procedures
page for information about the adoption process, adoption hours,
adoption fees, and directions to the shelter.
C.A.R.E. Dog Owner's Manual
The
C.A.R.E. Dog Owner's Manual is a collection of the information that we
hand out to new adopters. Included in this downloadable PDF is a number
of informative articles
gathered from numerous sources to help you with your new family member.
We
sometimes have puppies available that
are
not on this list. Our puppies are usually kept in foster homes until
they ready to come to your home. Please call or stop by the shelter
during our adoption
hours to speak to an adoption
counselor.
Regis
American Bull/Terrier Mix, 8 years old, Neutered male.
I
was well-loved by my previous owners, but they had to move to a smaller
place and could not take me along. For the most part, I’m an easy-going
guy who enjoys walks and hanging out with people. Friendly and not
overly demanding, I’d be happy with basic care and attention, a comfy
bed and some toys. (Oh—a towel under my water bowl would be good idea
since I'm a bit of a messy drinker!) I can be strong on leash at times
but I do already know some basic obedience commands such as Sit, Down
and Give Paw. Once I’m home (with you!) and I understand your routine,
I’m sure our relationship will be one of respect and mutual admiration.
Regis would do best in a home with children over 13. He needs work with dogs. No cats.
Regis is housebroken.
Attendance in D.O.G. Obedience classes is required.
Regis is neutered, microchipped and has had a full veterinary checkup and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Regis and speak to an adoption counselor for more information about him. Thank you.
Midnight
Labrador/Terrier Mix, 2 - 3 years old, Neutered male.
I get vey excited each and everytime I get to say "Hi" to someone, and
I mean every time! Wiggle, wag, and squirm, that's my style. But I do
relax and settle, eventually. I just love to sit next to people or
lay by their feet. I really prefer your attention more then anything
else. I can be timid at times (hard to believe since I am so strong and
handsome), so I need to work on my self-confidence. I also am clueless
when it comes to playing with toys (so embarrasing to admit), but I
have a great combination of muscle, joy, humor and companionship and
that is what counts.
Midnight would do best in a home with children over 12. He needs work with dogs and cats.
Midnight needs minimal housebreaking.
Attendance in D.O.G. Obedience classes is required.
Midnight is neutered, microchipped and has had a full veterinary checkup and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Midnight and speak to an adoption counselor for more information about him. Thank you.
Penny
Boxer/Boston
Terrier Mix, 1 year old, Spayed female.
I’m
an outgoing and friendly dog who craves your attention and affection. I
know I’ll make you laugh and smile often, since I’m silly and goofy
throughout the day. My joyful spirit is contagious and I apply it to
all my endeavors. Be it training, playing, loving, investigating or
going for walks – I guess “Gusto” could be my middle name! But I have a
quiet side, too. I love snuggling, chew toys, and long cozy snoozes.
Yep, I have it all—wiggly, sensitive, not too big, exuberant, a sense
of humor, inquisitive, joyful, smart, playful and loving. What more
could you ask for?
I’m
a friendly, relaxed girl with a not-a-care-in-the-world outlook on
life. I love getting attention and hanging out while I chew anything I
can get my mouth on (chewing feels so good on my teeth!). I can be
playful and inquisitive some of the time, mellow and lazy other times.
I’m eager to learn and a quick study thanks to my smarts and love for
treats. I may still be a puppy, but I’m so ready to start growing out
of my youthful behaviors and mature into a solid canine companion for
you.
No cats. Stella needs work with dogs due to her limited experience.
D.O.G. Puppy classes required. Upon graduation, adult class highly recommended.
Stella is not housebroken yet, but she’s going through crate training at shelter.
Stella is spayed, microchipped and has had a full veterinary checkup and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Stella and speak to an adoption counselor for more information about her. Thank you.
Holly
Chihuahua Mix, 8 - 10 years old, Spayed female.
I'm
a reserved, gentle dog who rarely barks and needs little more than
someone to care for me and love me. I walk calmly on leash, but don't
really need long walks. I'd much rather sit and relax while watching
the world go by. Since I'm a little older, I can get startled easily,
but nothing upsets me for long. If you're looking for a quiet,
friendly, sweet companion, please come and meet me.
Holly is spayed, microchipped and has had a full veterinary checkup and
vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Holly and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about her. Thank you.
Gregg
I've been adopted!
Lab/Viszla
Mix, 1 - 1.5 years old, Neutered male.
I’m
a social, friendly, high energy guy who loves attention and wants
action now! I enjoy meeting people and walk fairly well on leash, but
can get jumpy at times. Since my life started off without a lot of
positive direction, I sometimes get a little goofy with misdirected
energy. I’m looking forward to attending obedience training with you to
show you how smart and agreeable I can be. I'm not very barky and I
quiet down easily on my own.
To
find the "feline-ality" of each cat, we administer assessments,
including friendliness, playfulness and confidence. Based on their
results, our cats are then placed in one of nine, color-coded
categories, including Purple (Love Bug), Orange (Personal Assistant)
and Green (Leader of the Band). When
you come to our shelter,
you'll fill out a survey that will tell you which color (purple,
orange, green) of cat would be your best match!
CARE
volunteers spend hours socializing the kitties and working to make them
comfortable during their stay at the shelter. Our goal is to get to
know the cats as individuals so we can help you to make the best choice
for your family.
The cats also
receive veterinary examinations and vaccinations. All medical
records will be provided as part of the adoption process.
If you are
interested in adopting, please carefully read through our adoption procedures
page for information about the adoption process, adoption hours,
adoption fees, and directions to the shelter.

We put our
kittens into foster homes to get
them
ready for your house! Please call or come by the shelter during adoption
hours to speak to an adoption

current availability.
Roger
Domestic
Shorthair, 1 - 2 years old, Black, Neutered male.
Look
deep into my golden eyes and tell me I'm the cat for you! I am very
handsome (if I do say so myself) and everyone comments on my silky fur.
I have a sweet disposition and would love to greet you at the door
every night. I like to play with interactive toys, so come on down on
the floor and let's play! Once you meet me, you'll know I'm your
soul-mate.
Roger
would do best in a home with children 8 and older, mostly because he
doesn't like being tightly held. Somewhat older or cat savvy kids
should be OK. We're not sure how he feels about other cats or dogs. Roger is microchipped, neutered, and has had a full veterinary checkup
and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Roger and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about him. Thank you.
Domestic Shorthair, 1 - 3 years old, Black and White, Neutered male.
I
am a real sweetie pie and all the volunteers love me. I'll roll over on
my back when you pick me up and when you give me a hug. I purr and purr
all day long, but also love to play. My favorite toy is the cat charmer
snake and I'll hunt and pounce! Please come meet to see how adorable
and sweet I am!
Due to his FeLV+ status,
Cubby should be the only cat in the home or should go to a home with
other FeLV+ cats. We're not sure how Cubby feels about dogs, but he
would probably do well with a respectful dog.
Cubby would do best in a home with children over the age of 8 (just so
they are old enough to understand that he may not have a long life). Cubby is microchipped, neutered, and has
had a full veterinary checkup
and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Cubby and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about him. Thank you.
Angie
Domestic
Shorthair, 7 years old, Tortoiseshell/Calico mix, Spayed female.
I'm
a beautiful girl with a big personality. I work hard and play hard and
my favorite job is working in the office and helping with paperwork at
the shelter. I'd love to be the purrsonal assistant to someone who
works from home. I'll even help you eat your lunchtime sandwich. I love
lap and cuddle time and I'll sit on your lap
for a while, so grab a book and let's relax when we're done working for
the day! Come
see me at the shelter and let's spend some quality time together!I don't like other kitties, so I am looking for
a home where I can have you all to myself. I'm the only cat you'll need in your life anyway, dahling!
Angie should be the only cat in the home. She might do well with an easy-going dog.
Angie
could go to a home with respectful children over 10.
Angie
is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup and
vaccines.
Please
come to the shelter to meet Angie and speak to an adoption counselor
for more information about her. Thank you.
Honey
I've been adopted!
Domestic Longhair, 12 years old, Black, Spayed female.
I
am very beautiful, demure and sweet. I love being brushed and feel so
good when I'm getting quiet cuddles and affection. I've had a hard time
adjusting to the noisy shelter and have been very scared and withdrawn.
I am just starting to come out of my shell. I ended up here after my
owner lost her home, so I was used to a nice quiet place where I lived
with one woman for 12 years. I'm looking forward to meeting you. I know
you'll want to take me home to your quiet, comfy place!
Adoption
Information:
Honey
would do best in a quiet adult home. She will probably take a long time
to adjust to a new home and may hide at first. She will probably always
hide from company.
Honey has lived with other cats and dogs, but they should be calm and polite so she doesn't feel overwhelmed.
Honey is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup and
vaccines. She recently had her teeth cleaned.
Please
come to the shelter to meet Honey and speak to an adoption counselor
for more information about her. Thank you.
Jersey
Domestic Longhair, 2 - 5 years old, Torbie, Spayed female.
I
am a beautiful Torbie (Tortoiseshell Tabby) lady with soft, fluffy fur.
I'm full of spunk and sass, but also have a sweet side. I like to
grumble, but it's all talk and catitude. I was found in a carrier
outside of Evanston North Shore hospital. I like to be with people and
will be a great companion with lots of purrsonality to share. I'm a
princess and I'll let you share my throne if you ask nicely (and give
me cheeky rubs).
Jersey would do best in a quiet home with no other cats or dogs and children over 13.
Jersey is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup
and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Jersey and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about her. Thank you.
Tamale
I've been adopted!
Domestic
Shorthair, 1 year old, Tortoiseshell, Spayed female.
I
am a tiny girl with large round eyes and an adorable round face. I am
gentle and shy and love to spend time curled up next to someone. I
would be a lovely petite couch potato for a new home! I can be a little
shy at first, but once you've won my trust, I'll repay you by letting
you stroke my beautiful torti fur. I am not overly playful, but enjoy
playing with most toys. Come meet me and be the lucky one who gets to
take me home!
We are not sure how Tamale feels about other cats or dogs.
Tamale
is very small for her age and she eats a lot and is slow to gain
weight. Her blood work does not show anything abnormal, so she may just
be a tiny cat!
Tamale is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup and
vaccines.
Please
come to the shelter to meet Tamale and speak to an adoption counselor
for more information about her. Thank you.
Charcoal
I've been adopted!
Domestic
Shorthair, 2 years old, Black, Neutered male.
I
am a very fun kitty. I am very talkative and responsive to everything
you say. I also have a cute trick I can do where I roll over and look
adorable. Oh, and I've been known to admire myself in the mirror. Why
not, I'm so cute! I love to pounce on feather wand toys when I'm
not cuddling up next to you. I can't wait to start my next adventure in
life...will it be at your house?
We are not sure how Charcoal feels about other cats or dogs. Charcoal is microchipped, neutered, and has had a full veterinary checkup
and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Charcoal and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about him. Thank you.
Hazel
Domestic
Shorthair, 1.5 years old, Tortoiseshell, Spayed female.
I
am an adorable lady with a checkerboard face who would love to come
home with you. I enjoy spending time with
people and like to be petted. My favorite activities are looking
out the window and sleeping on your bed. Cat beds are for cats, "real"
beds are for princesses, like me! I had a litter of kittens and they
have all been adopted, so now I'm ready to go to my forever home and
become the center of attention, like I deserve!
Hazel would do best as the only cat. We are not sure how she feels about dogs.
Hazel would do best in a home with children 10 and older.
Hazel is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup
and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Hazel and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about her. Thank you.
Gizmo
Domestic
Shorthair, 12.5 years old, Grey Tabby, Neutered male.
I
am a bit scared being at the shelter. I was in a home, but the family
could no longer keep me due to some financial issues, so they brought
me to C.A.R.E. to help me find my second chance. I am sweet and shy,
but I love head scratches and will respond with slow blinks if you sit
and talk sweetly to me. One of my favorite past-times is finding the
sunny spots and sunbathing in windows. Do you have a nice window for me
to sit in?
Gizmo
has lived with other cats and dogs before, but would need a slow
introduction process to ease his transition into his new home.
Gizmo would do best in a home with children 10 and older.
Gizmo is microchipped, neutered, and has had a full veterinary checkup
and vaccines.
Please come to the shelter to meet Gizmo and speak to an adoption
counselor for more information about him. Thank you.
Jett
Domestic
Longthair, 6 years old, Black & White, Neutered male.
I
was very scared when I came to the shelter, but have blossomed with the
love that the volunteers have given me. I can be very talkative and I
like to know that people are listening to the important things I have
to say. I like fuzzy mice and cat charmers, but what I really love is
being petted and cuddle time. Oh, and I love the compliments that I get
for my fantastic long, white whiskers.
Hi
there! My name is Amor and I love to play and show my frisky side! I am
an expert bird hunter and I will capture and kill any feather toy that
you wave in front of me. I also like to climb on your shoulder to smell
your breath. I like to play rough, but that should calm down as I get a
little older and you teach me the right way to play. If you're looking
for a young, acrobatic kitty with lots of spunk, that's me!
Adoption
Information:
Amor would do best in a home with another feline playmate. She would probably be OK with respectful older children.
Amor is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup and
vaccines.
Please
come to the shelter to meet Amor and speak to an adoption counselor
for more information about her. Thank you.
