C.A.R.E. Animals for Adoption

Check out these fine furry creatures! All these and more are available for adoption at the Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton Street, in Evanston. If you are interested in adopting, please carefully read through our adoption procedures page for information about the adoption process, adoption hours, adoption fees, and directions to the shelter.

You can now see some of our available animals on WGN Noon News!

If you are looking for a specific breed that you don't see listed here, or are not in our area, try http://www.petfinder.com/ to search on breed, age, size, temperament and more near your zip code! Most large shelters, smaller organizations and breed rescue groups list their animals on Petfinder, so it's a great centralized place to do a pet search.  You may be able to save one of the millions of animals that are euthanized for lack of homes each year.

Available Dogs

Last updated June 30, 2009

All of our dogs have gone through the ASPCA Meet Your Match Canine-ality assessment in addition to the Assess a Pet and SAFER behavior evaluations.

To find the "canine-ality" of each dog, we administer five assessments, including friendliness, playfulness, energy level, motivation and drive. Based on their results, our dogs are then placed in one of nine, color-coded categories: Purple (Couch Potato, Constant Companion, Teacher's Pet), Orange (Wallflower, Goofball, Busy Bee) and Green (Free Spirit, Life of the Party, Go-Getter). When you come to our shelter, you'll fill out a survey that will tell you which color (purple, orange, green) of dog would be your best match!

Puppies

We sometimes have puppies available that are not on this list. Our puppies are usually kept in foster homes until they ready to come to your home. Please call or stop by the shelter during our adoption hours to speak to an adoption counselor.

Addison
Beagle, 5 - 6 years old, Spayed female.

Pleasing plump canine seeks humans of her own.  I used to begin my day with endless wagging of my tail when I saw a treat in nearby.  That was my version of low impact aerobics.  Didn't work so well for me as I now have a few extra pounds to shed.  I'd like to become a sporty gal pal once again.  Can you take me on long walks?  Throw some balls for me to catch?  Cheer me on as I race and jump in my version of high impact aerobics? I would love an active human or two to work out with.  I’m a delight that will keep your stress levels down.  You will find me easy to come home to and curl up with on the sofa in front of the fireplace on cold winter nights, and a great companion for a leisurely stroll in the park. A sweet pooch, I love treats and toys and am just waiting for the chance to show you how right we are for each other.  Please come to meet me.

ASPCA Canine-ality™ Assessment rating:  Coming Soon

Remy
Terrier Mix, 1.5 years old, Neutered male.

Handsome, strong, confident, affectionate, and exuberant canine seek forever humans of my own.  I love my treats and toys and look forward to long walks and lots of exercise in a yard of my own.  Being young and inexperienced, I have been known to be naughty and counter surf.  A patient, but firm, experienced dog guardian with a sense of humor willing to teach me proper canine behaviors would be ideal.  I'm young and have so much to offer and look forward to.  Shelter volunteers have taught me to sit, lie down, shake paw, and walk well on a leash.  Come meet me.  I'll be waiting for you.

Cameron
Terrier Mix, 1 years old, Spayed female.

George Eliot said “Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.”  That describes me pretty well.  A friendly pooch with a sweet nature, you will find me easy to be with. I'm a quick learner, like people contact, and enjoy hugs from humans.  I long for a forever home that won't turn me away, a place where I will always be loved and welcome to stay.   A home where my humans will spend time with me and take me to positive obedience classes. Can you give me that home?  I sure hope you will.

Spirit
Terrier Mix, 1 years old, Neutered male.

Multi-talented pooch needs you!  I ski, jog, love yoga, type, read, write, speak woof, understand English, and can translate meow.  And if you believe that, I have some land in Florida I could sell you.  He he he!  The truth is that I am a young and inexperienced pooch that can be a great companion with positive training.  Spend time to introduce me to new people, locations, situations, and I will respond quickly, working hard to please you.  Are you the type of human willing to make a commitment and take things one step-at-a-time?  I promise to be an A+ student and companion if you just give me the chance.  What do you say?

King
Terrier Mix, 6 months old, Neutered male.

Cool "dude" into imaginary astronomy and bird watching seeks refined humans for fun and adventure.  Just kidding, but you laughed right?  Let me “help” you empty that doggie treat box.  Let's play fetch, take long walks together and you will see what a good boy I am.  Call me the sporty and attractive pooch that is ready to help you enjoy life to the fullest.  Can I call you Mom and Dad?  I sure would like to!  Give me attention, training, and exercise and I'll be the happiest canine ever.  What do you say?  Are you ready for a big baby like me that will make you the center of their world?

Sparky
Jack Russell Terrier Mix, 2 - 3 years old, Neutered male.

Exuberant, handsome plus, lover of life, seeks committed humans of his very own.  I have a high energy level, and am quite capable of entertaining for hours at a time.  I'm a diamond in the rough at the moment, but take me  to a positive obedience class where I can learn what is expected of a good canine citizen, and I will shine.  I would love a fenced in yard to run and play in, and expand my youthful energy.  I'm not the type to be happy in a condo or apartment or with a human that doesn't want to work with me.  I need love, attention, affection, and for you to be patient as I learn what is acceptable in your home.  Won't you come to meet me and see if we are made for each other?  I promise you will be glad you did.

Fuchsia
Domestic Shorthair, 3 years old, Gray and white, Spayed female.

“A house without a cat or a dog is the house of a scoundrel.”  Have you heard this Portuguese proverb?  Hmm... We can rectify that and save your reputation.  We wouldn't want the neighbors to think badly of you now would we? Here's how I see it.  You appreciating me for the precious feline I am.  You massaging my tummy gently if I jump in your lap.  You smiling and enjoying the sound of my purr, purr, purring.  Me enjoying toys, catnip, and gently showing my affection and intelligence.  That is how I see it.  What’s your version?  Come on over and tell me.  I can't wait to meet you.

ASPCA Feline-ality™ Assessment rating:  Orange / Sidekick.

Claire
Domestic Shorthair, 3 years old, Black and white, Spayed female.

Are you a music lover?  Appreciate the finer things in life?  Looking for an excellent companion?  Albert Schweitzer said "There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."   Well, I can't play the piano or guitar but will probably sit nearby and listen if you exhibit real talent.  If you play your cards right (or should I say chords?) then I will dazzle you with my intelligence and charm.  If music is the way to your heart, brushing and massaging are the way to mine.  Why don't you come meet me and find out more about me?  I'll be waiting for you.

ASPCA Feline-ality™ Assessment rating:  Orange / Personal Assistant.

I could tell you that my trust fund has run out, the party is over, and that this Romeo is going to settle down. That would bring a smile to your face. I could make you laugh by saying "If you’re old and ugly, please be rich."  But, those would be lies. The truth is that I am a sweet feline in need of loving and committed humans of my very own. I promise you the best is yet to come.  Please come to meet me and you can see for yourself.

Jasmine
Domestic Shorthair, 8 years old, White, Spayed female.

Meow, Meow, Meow!  Translation... Beautiful white feline seeks humans of her very own. The volunteers are very nice to me, but life in a shelter is just not the same as having a family of your own to love you. Oh! To have the freedom to roam around a real home, my own sunny window to look at the birdies and squirrels out of, a feather dancer to swat at, or a warm lap to curl up in when I want one. This is my dream. I'm a talkative feline ready to share many purrls of wisdom with you.  Ready to listen and make my dreams come true?
