How to Adopt from C.A.R.E.
The Evanston Animal Shelter was originally established as a holding facility for animals brought into the shelter by the Animal Control Officer. Over the years, the volunteers have taken on the responsibility of promoting the adoption of the animals brought in, whether stray or surrendered pets. When each animal enters the shelter it receives a medical examination by a veterinarian. Stray animals are not available for adoption for 7 days.
Our adoption process has evolved from many years of experience. All of our cats and dogs have gone through the ASPCA Meet Your Match Canine-ality and Feline-ality assessment. The dogs also receive an Assess A Pet and SAFER behavior evaluation. The goal of our adoption counselors is to make a good match between animal and human. We spend time with each animal and get to know its unique personality and different needs. If a specific dog, for example, has large amounts of energy and needs lots of space to run, it is unlikely that he would meet the needs of a person who works long hours and would be unable to exercise the dog. It would be a mismatch that would be bad for dog and human alike. Our adoption counselors look forward to working with you to help you find the right pet for your home.
On your initial visit to our shelter, you will be asked to fill out an adoption survey that will help guide you to the animals that are most likely to be successful matches for your home. One of our adoption counselors will meet and talk with you to get a sense of the kind of pet you are looking for and what good candidates we have available. Adoptors meet one-on-one in a visiting room with the dogs or cats that are a good match. We've found that it is overwhelming for everyone concerned to have potential adoptors walking through the shelter and we feel this gives you a better sense of the animal's behavior than if your first encounter was with the animal caged. Please be prepared to spend at least 45 minutes to an hour on your first visit to our shelter.
Many people believe that they can take a new pet home immediately; however, to ensure that good match we've been talking about, it typically takes at least several days to process an adoption. Be patient! You and your new pet will have many years together.
Adoption Fees:
Dog or Puppy = $100
1 Cat or Kitten=$100
2 Cats or Kittens=$125 (an additional $50 deposit for unneutered or unspayed animal is collected until proof of alteration can be provided)Adoption fees can be paid with cash or check. We do not accept credit cards.
Our fees include a full medical exam by a veterinarian. This includes a Feline Leukemia and FIV (Feline Immunideficiency Virus) test for cats, Rabies and Distemper Vaccines, deworming and Spay/Neuter. Dogs receive a Heartworm Check, Spay/Neuter, Rabies and Distemper Vaccines, deworming, and Kennel Cough preventative. Our modest adoption fees do not cover the procedures and vet work that we provide the shelter animals. We fundraise to make up the difference. Any ongoing medical needs that C.A.R.E. is aware of are explained fully, (including daily medicine costs), to the potential adoptor, and become the responsibility of the adoptor.
